The meniscus is a crescent-shaped cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber between the femur and the tibia. A meniscus tear can cause pain, swelling and joint locking, making walking and movement difficult. This type of injury often occurs during sudden movements, such as twisting the knee, a direct impact or overexertion.
Some small injuries can heal on their own with rest and rehabilitation, but others require surgery. The decision depends on the location and severity of the tear, as well as your level of activity.
Dr Khalil Masri, an expert in orthopaedic surgery, tailors each treatment to your situation to ensure an effective and lasting recovery. If you are suffering from knee pain and would like expert advice, make an appointment today for a personalised consultation.
These operations are performed under arthroscopy, a minimally invasive technique that allows for faster recovery. The operation is generally quick, followed by a period of re-education to restore optimum mobility.
Dr Masri performs two types of operations: meniscectomy, which removes the damaged part of the meniscus, and meniscal repair, which preserves and sutures the meniscus for better recovery.
Meniscectomy: If the damaged part of the meniscus cannot be repaired, it is removed to relieve pain and restore mobility.
Meniscal repair: Where possible, the meniscus is sutured to promote natural healing and preserve joint function.
After a meniscectomy, most patients experience rapid pain relief and can return to normal activity within a few weeks. With meniscal repair, recovery is more gradual, but allows the best possible long-term preservation of the joint.
Dr Masri, Marianne and the rest of his team were amazing. As soon as I contacted the clinic, I felt in good hands and Marianne made sure that my case was reviewed quickly by the right doctor. It was a big relief! Dr Masri made room in his schedule to see me as quickly as possible. He took time to answer all my questions and was really reassuring. He explained that he would only be able to tell during my surgery if he could repair the meniscus or if he would need to take part of it out. He made sure I understood the 2 surgeries and their impacts. The day of the surgery everyone was amazing and attentive. I ended up needing a partial meniscectomy (for a bucket handle meniscus tear). I’m now 8 weeks post op and doing really well thanks to the team’s amazing work and efficiency.
